The Importance of Being Alice A Matchmaker in Wonderland Katie Macalister 9780451471376 Books Reviews

I’ve been a huge fan of Katie’s Dragon series, and not quite as devoted to but still enjoyed the Beloved series, but I have never before read one of her romances. I have been sorely disappointed in the past switching from an author’s PR series to a regular romance series.
Thankfully, this time I was quite delighted. Elliot’s prim and proper old world style clashes beautifully with Alice’s new YOLO style. The comedy is something I always look forward to. A lot of romances I’ve read are pure romance, where Katie manages to put comedy and real world flaws into her characters. I also enjoyed her made up words. Hussitude had me laughing so loud in a quiet Starbucks that I got quite the look from other patrons.
I enjoyed being able to relate to Alice, having just been through a break up and moving on short notice. She also worried about money and actually so did Elliot. I loved all the normal tourist things they did and the little adventures that could happen to anyone that they took. The coffee house scene was particularly entertaining.
I can’t wait to see what her next romance has in store for us even though I am dying to read the next dragon book.
Katie MacAlister returns to contemporaries. Although mostly loved for her Dark Ones and Dragon novels, I’m have a place in my heart for Katie MacAlister’s contemporaries.

The Importance of Being Alice kicks off the Ainsley Brothers novels, also known as the A Matchmaker in Wonderland Romance.

The story begins with our hero, Elliot, a modern day Lord. Although it provides him with a title, it also burdens him with tremendous debt, a castle in need of repair, and a large family consisting of a dozen siblings, both related and adopted. His hilariously eccentric mother is loving, but aloof to the castle’s maintenance needs. This causes Elliot to bear the grunt of the family’s responsibilities. He has a successful career as an author, but his work, the needs of the castle, being a role model (and sometimes father figure) for his younger siblings, and the mountainous debt have caused Elliot to have no room for fun in his life.

Enter, Alice. Alice is the former fiancée of Elliot’s flighty friend, Patrick. Alice and Patrick had planned to cruise Europe together, but Patrick decided to leave Alice for another woman. Plucky, spontaneous, and adventure-loving Alice decides this won’t get her down. She decides to continue on with the cruise, since she already paid for her half, and start a new chapter in her life.

Through a small mix up, Patrick gives Elliot the other half of the cabin for the cruise, and Elliot and Alice must deal with an awkward living situation. They decide to make the best of it, and as time rolls on, they find in each other the missing pieces to their lives. Elliot grounds Alice, while she provides a lightness and joyful frivolity that Elliot has long forgotten. Through adventures in picturesque sounding locales, the pleasant chaos of large families, sex clubs, and sassy wit conversations, Katie MacAlister kicks off a new set of books of fun and wacky characters who I can’t wait to read more of.

Pros Various locales, witty banter, and best of all, the Ainsley brothers. My favorite parts were the characters in Elliot Ainsley’s family, especially his brother Gunner. As always, Katie MacAlister’s writing caused me to laugh. Really laugh. As in, audible to others. There is never a lack of humor in her writing, and she has a style that always leaves me with at least one character I wish was my best friend.

Cons I found this read a bit faster than her other works, in both paranormal and contemporary, and not necessarily in a positive way. As much as I loved Alice’s positivity and warmth, I didn’t find her as well rounded as Katie’s other female leads. If anything, I found Elliot’s character more developed. Their romance is quite fast (which is typical in one of her novels), but this was more accelerated emotionally than usual. Due to what seemed sped up in this particular novel took me out of the story a bit. Unlike some of her other series, I found my focus to be on her character Gunner (the lead for Book #2), and wanting to know more about him. As much as I can appreciate an author leaving breadcrumbs for the next book in a series, as I read The Importance of Being Alice, I found myself less interested in Alice and more interested in what was happening with secondary characters.

Overall As always, Katie MacAlister delivers wit, fun, and descriptions of locations that leave my wanderlust growing to visit Europe with an ache of wanting her narrating while I’m visiting that country. I’m more excited to read Gunner Ainsley’s story, but Elliot and Alice are charming together and create a setting into what is sure to be a fun glimpse into the Ainsley family entertaining chaos.
