Highly recommend for book clubs. This book had me making highlights in reflection of so many thought-provoking scenarios. As Tina, married for forty years, tied to farming, back breaking home chores, and a lonely marriage, corresponds with Anders, widower, and museum worker. Both have lived very different lives as reflected in their correspondence. This captivating first novel begs for more books from Ms. Young. Her first effort is outstanding.

Meet Me at the Museum A Novel Anne Youngson 9781250295163 Books Reviews

Enjoyable read of two people getting to know one another thru letters, then email. They share their thoughts, feelings, life, and soon find they are enjoying a close friendship without every meeting. The letters allow each to state thoughts and feelings they may not have acknowledged without the other. Highly recommend.
There’s nothing about this book I didn’t like. ’s description compared it to The Guernsey Literary Guild and Potato Peel Society. That was one of my favorite books of all time and Meet Me at the Museum is reminiscent of that book. There are only two main characters writing letters to each other in the book. The relationship between the two was so heart warming and true to life. The letters written from the woman’s point of view were so descriptive and, in parts, very funny. I could so see myself saying some of the things that she did. There was a conversation about knitting that took place on a train trip that was so simple yet so real and, if you are a traveler, you can see this conversation taking place. It made me want to have a "special" pen pal of this type, someone you could just spill your guts to and from whom expect to get a reciprocal letter in return. I truly loved this book.
What a wonderful book. It starts with a letter to a Danish museum regarding The Tollund Man who lived during the Iron Age, 250 BC. The well preserved corpse is exhibited there. An inquiry turns into a correspondence between a widower and a farmer’s wife in Great Britain. Over months, these letters that started out being sent by mail and then became printed out emails, got more and more personal. Each individual deriving something that met a personal need. They both grew in how they viewed the world. The book becomes intense in feelings. I loved the values both people had and how they were told. There is so much appreciation for the important things in life. This is the author’s first novel. She is a retired British woman. I am not certain this book is for everyone as it is not fast moving. It needs a relaxed person who can savor the thoughts and words. I did read it over a few days but took thoughtful breaks. It was indeed a well thought out book. I would have liked to have had more information as to the author’s background. I thought she might have been an English teacher as the grammar was correct and discussed between the two parties. I hope she writes a second novel.
This is a little jewel of a novel about a man and a woman exchanging views about the disappointments they have had in their lives and how they have coped with them. In time, a deep relationship develops.
I waffled between giving this book 4 or 5 stars. It’s a very well-written, gentle, reflective epistolary love story that quietly grips you and keeps you turning the pages even though it’s not what you would call passionate at all. The characters are gentle but compelling in their honesty and humanity and in the way they reveal portions of themselves through their letters and as they become fond of each other, you become fond of them as well. I was not at all aware of the Tollund man but he’s pretty much also a character in this novel with his calm acceptance of his fate and his relatability and resemblance to the characters in the novel (figuratively as well as physically). These are not perfect characters but they are at a time in life when maturity gives them an empathy for the mistakes of life and they are able to reflect on what they could have done otherwise even as they accept themselves. I highly recommend this gentle read. It’s not one that will have you on tenterhooks- it’s quiet and peaceful but strangely quite a page turner. If you’re stressed and looking for something gentle but compelling that will make you think about your own life even if it’s not quite what you expected when you were young, READ THIS BOOK. One of my favorites of the year.
I never thought the letter writing format could create such real characters but the author did it. I read this book in two sittings, it's that good, folks. I needed a book like this to escape from all the negative aura around our country and world right now.
This book charmed me. Two older adults in different but difficult places in their lives, meet and develop a surprisingly honest intimacy. The lost art of letter writing is alive and well in this book. The old fashioned manners of both characters make their stories of growing dissatisfaction with their current lives and yet their loyalty to their families shines through. I would like to meet them.
Highly recommend for book clubs. This book had me making highlights in reflection of so many thought-provoking scenarios. As Tina, married for forty years, tied to farming, back breaking home chores, and a lonely marriage, corresponds with Anders, widower, and museum worker.
