Mr Lawrence Mannering is a brilliant Liberal politician who has retired early to the country after his party lose power. He pursues the contemplative life, appreciating the joys of rural England, and writing occasionally for the journals. He meets and falls in love with a woman who has rented a cottage nearby for the summer. But Mannering is too charismatic to be left alone.Sir Leslie Borrowdean, an ambitious and crafty colleague, is sent to bring Mannering out of retirement, for the good of the party. "He had left London at a moment when he could ill be spared and had not travelled to this out-of-the-way corner of the kingdom to exchange purposeless platitudes with a man whose present attitude towards life...he heartily despised."

Mannering has several reasons for his reticence to return. Not the least of which are his obligations to Mrs. Blanche Phillimore and her daughter. Mannering is indebted to her, in a manner which remains long undisclosed, and she impedes his advancement.

Whether he will return to politics, how he resolves his obligations, and what happens to his love for the beautiful neighbor? These and other elements of Victorian morality, society, and politics are the substance of the novel.

In the early 20th Century, the condition of the working class produced significant turmoil in the left leaning political parties. The Liberal party, which had enjoyed support of the working class, was under threat from the Labour party, and trade unionists, who were the leading edge of the socialist/communist movement. This novel shows considerable sympathy for the condition of the poorest workers, who have lost their jobs to automation, recession, and layoffs. The use of Tariffs (taxes on foreign trade) to protect British industry is the heart of the political question in this story.

An interesting read. Like a soap opera!
This is a great political mystery that is timeless even though it is over 100 years old. Once you start with Oppenheim, you'll get hooked on his swift paced stories with fascinating characters. It's also fun to have a window into a world where people were polite to each other (even when a murder plot was afoot) and the language is family friendly
